Cannes: the Mipcom has resisted in the storm

The first one of the great congresses on the Riviera after the events of September 11th, the International programme market has experienced a decrease of the number of people attending, but it has happened without any incidents.

This Mipcom 2001 was the first big international congress to take place on the Riviera after the tragic events of September 11th 2001. So, the regional professionals have particularly interested in the results. Of course, such results have been impacted by the international situation after the shock mixed to a relevant economic slowdown in the media.Thus, for the first time since it has been created, this 17th Mipcom (International Film and Programme Market) which has ended on Friday October 12th at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, has experienced a decrease of the number of participants. More than 11.000 people were expected. Only 9.935 have come. Compared to year 2000 (11.760 participants), the number of people attending this show has decreased by 15%.In terms of exhibiting companies, however, it has increased (1.244 companies this year as against 1.189). On the other hand, the number of present companies has decreased (2.824 this year as against 2.918 last year). In the current economic situation, Reed Midem Organisation doesn't have to be ashamed of these results. It's pretty a miracle that the event has been maintained, showing thus that, in spite of terrorist threats, life still goes on.As far as business is concerned, opinions are mitigated. Some producers have thought that the atmosphere was depressing and that it has been normal only on Tuesday, as the activity has started softly on Monday and has fallen very early on Wednesday. But several American studios, as Fox, have done a lot of business. Disney has even declared that it has been the best Mipcom in five years. Indeed, in times of crisis, professionals tend to focus on secured values.The second congress appointment after the Mipcom which, in spite of a false bomb alert on Friday morning, has occurred peacefully: Tax Free from October 22nd to 26th.
