How can you get high performances and increase the autonomy at the same time? It is the equation of the year, which was the main theme of the Microprocessor Forum held in San Jose, California, from October 15th to 19th. Yahoo presents a synthesis of the big trends revealed by the founders in terms of new processors. Transmeta and its new Crusoe, Intel, with its Pentium4 for portables, and IBM have all brought solutions allowing to get high speed clocks (between 1 and 2 GHz) while consuming less electricity. Beyond the SpeedStep technology of Intel, which slows down the speed of the processor when the portable works on battery, the founders are orienting on a brownout solution for some part of the chip when they will not be used.
